Adam & Eve

Updated: Jan 15, 2023

Read the Bible story here or in a children’s Bible appropriate for your child’s age.

You can also re-tell the story in an age-appropriate manner depending on the age of children in your group.

Remember last time we talked about how God made all the things on the earth. He made the sun and the birds and fish and animals. He also made people.

Let’s see what’s in our Bible story box today. (Open the box and let each child pull a figure or printed picture from the box pertaining to today’s lesson. You could put little dolls to be Adam and Eve, a piece of fruit, a fake plant, a toy snake, etc.) Let’s see what these things have to do with our story today.

When God made the man, he put him in a beautiful garden in Eden to care for it and work it. God told the man, “You may eat fruit from any tree in the garden, but you must not eat from the tree in the middle of the garden, which gives the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat from that tree, you will die.”

Then God had the man name all the animals. He gave names to all the birds and the wild animals and the tame animals. But he couldn’t find a helper just right for him. So God made a woman to be his wife.

A tricky snake was in the garden. One day the snake came to the woman.

“Did God really say you can’t eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?”

The woman answered him, “We may eat the fruit from the trees. But NOT the tree in the middle of the garden or we will die.”

Then the tricky snake lied to her. He said, “You will not die. God knows if you eat from that tree, you will learn about good and evil and then you will be like God!”

Then the woman saw that the tree was beautiful. The fruit looked good to eat and the snake said it would make her wise. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate it.

Then, the man and his wife realized that they didn’t have on any clothes and they were embarrassed. Before, it didn’t bother them, but now it did. They hid from God. The Lord called to the man, “Where are you?” The man answered, “I was afraid because I was naked. So I hid.”

God asked, “Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat from the tree that I told you not to?”

The man said, “The woman you gave me, she gave me the fruit. So I ate it.”

The Lord asked the woman, “What have you done?”

She said, “The snake tricked me. So I ate the fruit.”

Then God cursed the snake. He punished the man and woman. We find out their names are Adam and Eve. God made clothes for them from animal skins and sent them to live away from the garden so they could not eat fruit from the tree of life and live forever. God put angels and a sword of fire at the entrance of the garden to keep them out.
